Kiaâs 2016 Rio sedan and Rio 5-door subcompacts may be small and inexpensive, but youâd never know it from looking at the pair. Used 2016 Kia Rio Pricing The 2016 Kia Rio sedan has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting at an appealing $14,990. The Rio 5-door starts at $16,320. The EX sedan pushes the price to $18,580, while the EX hatchback lists for $18,730.
A loaded SX pushes the price tag just shy of $21,500. Among rivals, only the Nissan Versa Note, Ford Fiesta and Chevrolet Sonic have starting prices near the $15,500 mark, and for the Fiesta and Sonic, theyâre sedan versions only.
The Nissan Versa sedan, however, has a sub-$13,000 price tag, while the Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback starts just under $14,000.
As you climb trims, the Rio’s price is comparable to most rivals. Before buying, check the KBB.com Fair Purchase Price to see what others are paying. On the resale front, the Rio is expected to be on par with the Sonic and Accent, but trail the Versa Note, Toyota Kia rio 2021 and Scion iA.
Driving the Used 2016 Kia Rio Most subcompact cars perform well in the crowded confines of city streets, but on the highway they sometimes struggle to keep up. With Kiaâs Rio for 2016, however, we didnât find this to be the case.
Acceleration from the 1.6-liter engine was swift and steady, impressive considering the engine puts out only 138 horsepower. On the highway we found the Rioâs ride to be stable and surprisingly smooth. The steering is nicely weighted and responsive to sudden inputs, and the brakes are strong with firm pedal feel. Zipping in and out of traffic was no problem in our Rio, although we did find the manual transmission to be subpar for this class; the 6-speed automatic is a much better choice.
In town, the Rio is king of the road, easily handling crowded city traffic and able to squeeze into the smallest parking paces. Interior Comfort Not surprising for an entry-level sedan and hatchback whose price ranges from under $15,000 to over $20,000, the Rio’s 5-passenger cabin varies from rather plain to rather impressive. In the least expensive models, you’ll be cranking your own windows and forgoing a telescoping steering wheel. Higher-end models, though, look the part of a premium vehicle thanks to a slick 7-inch touch-screen command system, leather trim and a power kia rio 2021.
Rear legroom is tight, but every Rio has a 60/40-split-folding rear seat for extra cargo. This really helps in the 5-door hatchback, which boasts nearly 50 cubic feet of space with seats folded. Exterior Styling The 2016 Kia Rio comes in two forms: 4-door sedan or 5-door hatchback. Both are small cars, but the hatchback is the smaller at over a foot shorter (wheelbase remains the same at 101.2 inches).
Both are pleasing to the eye, with the Kia Rio sedan looking like a smaller version of the stylish Optima, and the Rio hatch more like a baby sibling to the Sportage kia rio 2021 SUV.
Wheels range from 15 to 17 inches, and top-line SX models feature dual exhaust outlets and a surprise: power-folding side mirrors that tuck into the car when it’s parked and locked.
Favorite Features LEATHER INTERIOR WITH HEATED FRONT SEATS Leather seating in subcompact cars is becoming more common, but the Rioâs available leather interior is backed up by a handsome sew pattern and, to keep your backside warm, built-in seat heaters. ONBOARD NAVIGATION Weâve tested plenty of base-model navigation setups but never one as good as what is offered in the 2016 Kia Rio subcompact sedan and hatchback. When coupled with the UVO infotainment and eServices package, the 7-inch touch-screen navigation unit is almost as useful as a smartphone.
Standard Features The Kia Rio comes in three trims: LX, EX and SX. The LX sedan has manual windows, a manual transmission and tilt-only steering wheel. It also includes air conditioning, a 4-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo with USB input, power heated side mirrors and 6-way-adjustable driver’s seat. The EX trim adds power windows/doorlocks, Bluetooth phone connectivity, a telescoping steering wheel and cruise control.
Top-line SX models come loaded with the 7-inch color touch-screen UVO infotainment and navigation system, a rearview camera, a sport-tuned suspension, heated leather seats, a power moonroof, 17-inch alloy wheels, paddle shifters and LED positioning lights.
Factory Options Major upgrades for this subcompact Kia sedan and hatchback come in the form of packages for the LX and EX. The LX can be equipped with the Power package that adds power windows, power locks and keyless entry. The EX trim offers the Eco package bringing Idle Stop & Go, UVO, a rearview camera and kia rio 2021 headlights.
The Designer package adds black and gray leather and cloth seating with contrasting stitching, a 4.3-inch color touch screen, rearview camera and auto headlights.
Individual options for all trims include an auto-dimming rearview mirror and, on sedans, a rear spoiler.
Engine & Transmission All versions of Kiaâs 2016 Rio subcompact sedan and hatchback are powered by a 138-horsepower 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine. Base sedan models come with a 6-speed manual transmission, while the two higher trims and hatchback models are all fitted with the more popular 6-speed automatic.
All Kia Rio models are front-wheel drive and run on regular unleaded gasoline. At 27 mpg city/37 mpg highway, the Rio’s fuel economy is good but not the best in this segment. EX models can be had with the Idle Stop & Go feature that cuts the engine at stoplights, but at a price of $1,200 and an improvement of only one mpg in city driving, it would take many miles to pencil out, if ever.

This car is extremely reliable. I'll be sad when I have to part ways with my Rio, but I'll need something with more space soon.
This car is perfect for people only carrying 3 other friends. The middle seat in the back is tiny. The trunk however is MASSIVE. Like, my friends jokingly climbed in to test it and three of them fit in the trunk.
It's huge. The only con I can think of is that the car is pretty low to the ground. Taller people feel like they're sitting on the ground.
You also have to be SUPER careful going over speed bumps. I learned that the hard way one time after hearing a scraping sound. Thankfully no damage. The six-speed manual trans is a pain around town. The engine is weak. I have to rev it 4/5 of the way to red line to pass and get up on the highway, however once you get it up to speed, it feels solid on the highway, but the engine starts to noticably growl above 60.
Seats are manual but can be adjusted easily to a comfortable position. However, the steering wheel has very limited adjustments. Consequently, I can't telescope it enough to be able to sit back comfortably.
This means that I can't stretch my legs out enough so my feet can never find a restful position on the gas pedal. I'm only 5'9. sound system is quite inferior. There's plenty of leg room in the back seat and adequate room in the trunk CLUTCH went out in my first year of ownership.
I went to the dealership to look around and the salesperson jumped on the band wagon sold this Kia Rio to me that I DIDN'T want to purchase. This type of car has absolutely NO spare tire in the wheel well of the trunk. You absolutely CAN'T HAUL ANYTHING IN IT FOR A LONG TRIP BECAUSE THERE'S NO TRUNK SPACE.
This vehicle is exactly as my review title states, Kia rio 2021. I enjoy this car so much honestly. It reminds me of a 90s commuter with just some subtle modern touches.
I have the manual transmission version and absolutely love the 6 speeds. Allows for great gas mileage and zipping around when needed. The suspension is stiff but this is expected since it is a value commuter car, I personally like this since it allows for better cornering and not to much lurching for passengers if I ever have any.
The interior is clean but all hard plastics on the dash and door panels. Cloth seats, buckets in the front with a bench style in the rear. Leg room in the back isn't too bad either.
My brother is 5'10 and was comfortable (I'm 5'7). The hatch is super spacious and kia rio 2021 seats fold down which is super convenient. Big plus for owning in a big city is that this thing fits anywhere, yeah that "too small" spot, guess what give it a go. Lastly, I got this for the soul purpose of "A to B" driving and it does this with ease. It also saves you a penny on gas. Car dies off frequently.

Everything on steeringwheel worked prior to their service. Now nothing works. Paint job low quality fades fast. Front body kit so low comes off easily when forward parked. Good on gas. Easy to park in small areas and turn abouts.

Every year, the extra-small sedan segment gets a little bit smaller, with automakers dropping subcompact vehicles.
The Kia Rio, however, just keeps soldiering on. The 2022 Kia Rio is unchanged from the previous model year, sticking with the same virtues: a low price, small dimensions and a long warranty. Fuel economy is impressive too, as you'd probably expect of such a small car. The EPA estimates that the Rio will return 36 mpg combined, but we easily beat that number during Edmunds' testing.
There are a few drawbacks to consider if you're looking at the Rio. Even among extra-small sedans, the Rio is low on cargo space. A telescoping steering wheel isn't available, and the standard seating position is a bit high so some drivers will have a hard time getting comfortable. We'd also skip the base trim level given its meager level of equipment.
Since there are so few extra-small sedans left, the list of rivals isn't long, but it includes vehicles such as the Nissan Versa and the Rio's cousin, the Hyundai Accent. If you're on a budget, you might also be interested in extra-small SUVs like the Kia Soul or the Hyundai Kona. Kia rio 2021 Rio is underpowered and underwhelming on the road. The 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine makes just 120 horsepower, and while that's typically enough for city streets, you have to use every single one to get up to speed on the highway. Lane changes and overtakes require more caution than anything else, and gaps that would be easy to exploit in most cars require more thought to slot into thanks to the Rio's prevailing lack of punch.
The one saving grace has to be its continuously variable automatic transmission, which is smooth and does a commendable job of exploiting what power the Rio has. Because of the Rio's soft suspension tune and near gripless all-season tires, it's not all that enjoyable to zoom around city streets.
The steering is far too eager to recenter itself and has an elastic feel to it. The Rio is a car that's happiest at half speed, and for its target audience, that's likely more than enough.
How comfortable is the Rio? The Rio's price of entry might be low, but that doesn't mean you're getting something that isn't sophisticated enough to deal with the ruts, lumps and bumps of day-to-day driving. A squishy suspension tune and tall tire sidewalls mean that the Rio rides surprisingly well. It isn't perfect, but the ride is better than you might expect.
Unfortunately, we can't stop there. The soft ride is a plus, but wind noise is almost always audible inside the cabin, and even if the suspension is set up for comfort, you do get shocks through the seat while going over bigger bumps. The seat itself is conventionally shaped, but it offers neither above-average support nor comfort. Also the absence of any armrest padding just feels inconsiderate. How’s the interior? Durable plastics coat a spartan interior, but simplicity is one of the Rio's strong suits.
It gets high marks for ease of use with logically laid out physical climate controls and easy-to-read dials. It's also quite easy to see out of the cabin in all directions and relatively roomy inside even though it's one of the smallest cars on the market. One of our biggest complaints with the interior has to be the compromised driving position. Because the wheel doesn't telescope, taller drivers will feel like they will need to sit too close to the pedals to be comfortable.
We understand that cheap cars aren't the places to look for luscious interior spaces, but we'd happily pay a little more for some of the basic creature comforts that would take the pain out of commutes. How’s the tech? The Rio's infotainment system is easy to navigate and simple to zip through, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard niceties.
We did find ourselves wishing for a slightly nicer stereo, but the system in the Rio is hard to fault. If anything, Kia could have kia rio 2021 more safety features in the Rio. Blind-spot monitoring was something we missed, and the lane keeping assist system in the Rio is nowhere near as helpful as those in other Kias including the K5 and Seltos. Small cars might be built to a price, but that doesn't mean you should be forced to miss out on important safety tech.
How’s the storage? Despite its small stature, the Rio — in its hatchback version — offers a surprising amount of space for cargo loading. With the rear seats up, you're offered 17.4 cubic feet of free space in the hatch area.
That's a little bigger than what you get from a typical midsize sedan's trunk, assuming you load all the way to the roof. Fold the second row down and you'll have 32.8 cubic feet available. A low floor makes loading and unloading an effortless experience. The Rio's kia rio 2021 cabin storage features the requisite cubbies and cupholders, but it isn't exceptional in this regard. Also the center console is pretty small, but to be fair, it's a narrow car.
The limited rear quarters won't be optimal for fitting a car seat either, and there's no special access to anchor points offered. How’s the fuel economy? According to EPA estimates, the Rio will get 36 mpg combined (33 city/41 highway), but in our hands the Rio performed far better.
Over the course of our 115-mile evaluation route, the super-sipping Rio managed an impressive 43 mpg. It's one of the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid cars we've recently tested. Is the Rio a good value?
Our test car stickered for around $20,000, making it one of the least expensive new cars you can buy. Given that fairly low price point, the Rio is actually pretty well built. The cabin has a lot of hard plastic panels, but they kia rio 2021 likely hold up well after years of abuse.
Unfortunately for the Rio, the Kia Forte, which doesn't cost that much more, offers more backseat space and a better ride, and it looks and feels significantly more modern. That said, there's little doubt that the Rio is a good value for the money. Kia's excellent warranties provide five years/60,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper and 10 years/100,000 miles of powertrain coverage.
Roadside assistance is also provided for the duration of the five-year warranty period. Unfortunately for the Rio, what it lacks most of all is personality.
Sometimes small cars have a bit of charm to the way they drive, but that's not the case here. The Rio is a device. It's an easygoing companion that asks for little more than a little fuel in return for its services, and that's all it has to be. If you're looking for something with a little X-factor for the same money, you're going to have to look elsewhere.
Which Rio does Edmunds recommend? The 2022 Kia Rio can be equipped as a four-door sedan or a hatchback, which Kia calls the 5-Door. Kia rio 2021 sedan is available in two trim levels: the base LX and the S.

The quality of roads around this massive metropolitan area ranges from very good to pretty poor (meaning pothole-ridden and full of large cracks). If you live in an area with constantly terrible roads, you may find the suspension tuning to not be soft enough for the constant beating, but I suspect that 90% of buyers will be plenty content with the suspension.certainly more so than its larger cousin, the Kia Forte with its very choppy suspension tuning over even modestly bad pavement.
Overall, the suspension tuning and ride comfort is decent to good; certainly better than the thrifty price tag would suggest. It might be a little too firm for some over *really* bad pavement due to the front strut/torsion beam rear setup, but the car *does* remain composed and well-controlled at all times. If pavement conditions are fair to good, you'll find this vehicle to be quite comfortable for both city trips and long journeys.
Fuel economy is where this vehicle really shines; it is fantastic for a non-hybrid. Official EPA ratings are 33 city/41 highway, but I've been consistently averaging 34-35 city/43-46 highway. DO NOTE that your fuel economy gauge in the insturmentation cluster may read something higher than what you'll actually get at the pump (a weird oversight by Kia). Mine constantly displays 36-39 in the city and 45-50 on the highway, which is 1-3 MPG too generous over real-world fuel economy.
My driving style is generally leisurely but I will punch it a bit, here and there. 70-75 MPH on the freeways; sometimes closer to 80 MPH, and there are a decent number of hills in my area. Some folks may be concerned about the CVT's performance, but the CVT in the Rio and the Forte uses a chain instead of a rubber belt. Unlike most CVT's, there's no weird lag, awkward pulling sensations or delays with acceleration throughout the power band.very consistent and predictable power.
Acceleration is solid and if you really need the extra power, you can either switch the transmission to sport mode and/or manually shift the simulated fake gears to quickly get up to highway speeds.
Honestly, I cannot really tell the difference between Kia's CVT (IVT as they call it) and a traditional automatic transmission. While you won't be beating anyone in a 0-60 race, you'll certainly have more than enough power to keep up with both city and freeway traffic without having to floor the accelerator.
